C&A: a European fashion leader building brand momentum city by city

C&A is one of Europe’s most established fashion retailers, with close to 1,300 stores across 17 European countries and a strong footprint in major urban markets. As the brand continues to evolve its city strategy, C&A is increasingly investing in high-visibility brand activations that bring its positioning to life where culture, demand, and brand preference are shaped fastest.

To take that strategy further, C&A brought its Energy Cities format to denim with “Denim Made for Moves,” a 360° city activation designed to turn the feeling of perfect-fit denim into something people could experience for themselves. Brand-building was at its core, aimed at visibility, engagement, and positive brand perception across Amsterdam, Antwerp, Munich, Berlin, and Prague, with in-store traffic and sales as a clear commercial objective alongside it.

At the same time, C&A wanted to quantify the business impact of the activation and understand how brand-building efforts translate into measurable results across different city structures.

To do so, C&A worked with Sellforte, applying the incrementality testing approach the two companies established together. Measured at store level across all five cities, the activation delivered causal incremental uplift in store traffic, total turnover, and denim sales.

The Challenge: One Activation, Everywhere at Once

Denim Made for Moves ran as a 360° city activation across Amsterdam, Antwerp, Munich, Berlin and Prague. In each city an immersive mirror room installation put the denim to the test through movement, supported by custom OOH, geotargeted paid social, influencer content, CRM and app communications, PR, and a full in-store transformation.

Consumers met all of it at once, which is exactly what made the business impact hard to establish. High-visibility campaigns generate obvious brand buzz, and their effect lands across a whole store network rather than at one measurable site. C&A wanted facts rather than assumptions on three questions that would decide how the format scales:

  • Can a city activation drive uplift beyond one store and into the broader city network?
  • Which store profiles and locations deliver the strongest results?
  • Under what conditions does a denim-led activation scale most effectively?

The Results: Strong City-Wide Store Impact

Munich stood out as the strongest activation city, supported by a prominent rollout anchored by the Neuhauser flagship.

The effect reached well beyond the activation sites themselves. In four of the five cities, multiple stores across the network showed uplift during the activation, with the city-level effect considerably larger than that of the activation store alone.

Denim performed strongest of all. Every activation store recorded a double-digit denim uplift, outpacing the uplift in total sales by a wide margin at almost every site, confirming that a category-led activation concentrates return in the category it is built around.

Across the program, the strongest results came where the activation was anchored by a flagship or a prime central store, a clear signal for how the format should be deployed in future seasons.

Key Learnings at a Glance

  • Denim Made for Moves translated brand-building into measurable store uplift
  • Denim was the strongest-performing category, fully aligned with the campaign focus
  • The mirror room gave the campaign a physical focal point in each city
  • High-visibility city activations can drive city-level outcomes, depending on local structure
  • Fact-based learnings now guide future investment decisions

C&A’s Analytics team led the analysis on a method built with Sellforte, with Sellforte validating the market where the signal was hardest to isolate.

Strategic Impact: Turning a Brand Activation

into a Measurable Learning Engine

Energy Cities reflects C&A's shift from broad, one-size-fits-all retail marketing toward locally relevant city brand building, creating momentum in the urban environments that shape national awareness, preference, and demand. Causal measurement is what makes that shift defensible beyond the marketing team:

  • Brand building: create momentum in key cities that generates a national halo
  • Brand preference: influence perception and buying behavior at scale
  • Strategic spillover: local action to broader brand and business impact
  • Smarter scaling: invest where city conditions maximize effectiveness

In a discipline usually defended on reach and sentiment, the incrementality test gave C&A the one thing that was missing: a trustworthy view of what a city activation caused in store. Denim Made for Moves now returns brand momentum and a quantified read on the sales behind it, including where, how much, and under what local conditions. Results of this kind also feed back into causal marketing mix modelling, so the value of brand activity shows up in the same model as the rest of the media plan.

With that in place, C&A can scale Energy Cities city by city, adapting the playbook and investing where local structure and demand unlock the highest impact.
